We are looking for an experienced Mechanical engineer to move research to production, working alongside world-leading researchers and engineers. The team is multi-disciplinary, comprising optics, software, and electronics experts with a collaborative and agile atmosphere. This role is based in Cambridge with some home working.

The project is storage technology related. Recent discoveries are impacting new storage design from the ground up. You must be an experienced Mechanical engineer to transfer this technology from research to production, working alongside world-leading researchers and engineers. The team is multi-disciplinary, comprising optics, software, and electronics experts with a collaborative and agile atmosphere.

The key responsibility of this role will be successful technology validation. This will include:

*Planning validation tests
*Working with the team to enable new functionality as required
*High tolerance design and build of mechanical assemblies
*Experimentation
*Clear documentation and report summaries including specifications
Required skills of Mechanical Engineer:

*Demonstrable expertise using CAD software (Solidworks)
*Demonstrable expertise with tolerances and statistical validation testing
*Hands-on experience with methods of fabrication to include machining and 3D printing.
*Experience working with 3rd party suppliers of high-precision, low-volume, custom-designed parts.
*Confidence communicating with colleagues from multi-disciplinary backgrounds across optics and instrument design to understand and present design goals and constraints.
*Design for Manufacture
*Software/coding familiarity (e.g., python)
The requirement is to work on site 60% of the time. So, you would need to live close to Cambridge.

This is an opportunity for a talented mechanical engineer to influence a high impact, disruptive project. The ideal candidate will enjoy being challenged and learning new skills around the core competency described. The solutions developed are overwhelmingly for prototype systems, often with fast iteration rates. We have a fail-fast attitude where experimentation and risk are embraced.
